Garrett Sawyer is a lifelong resident of the City of Richmond and is a product of the public school system. Garrett matriculated through the public school system from elementary through high school, having attended Westover Hills Elementary School, Thompson Middle School, and Open High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia and a MA in Public Administration. He is a 17-year Human Resources and Operations executive with extensive experience in finance, governance, strategic planning, project management, and policy creation and implementation. He is the proud CEO and President of Sawyer HR Consulting, where he works with midsize to large organizations throughout the United States.


Garrett is very invested in Richmond Public Schools. He has spent the last 16 years serving as a board member for a local nonprofit devoted to providing backpacks filled with school supplies to all students within the City of Richmond. He has built longstanding partnerships within the city to connect parents and students to resources. He has personally assisted teachers in the city with getting the resources they deserve to educate children in the classroom.

Garrett is focused on getting things done. He is highly focused on utilizing data to inform positive outcomes for stakeholders within the Richmond Public Schools. He is fully committed to ensuring ALL schools become fully accredited, providing necessary resources for teachers, administrators and support staff, providing newly built and safe buildings throughout the city, and seeing a functioning board that is focused on good governance.

Garrett was raised by a single mother, a social worker who instilled the value of public service from a young age. That’s why he’s running for the Richmond School Board. Garrett serves in leadership positions with the Ethics Reform Commission, Richmond Public Library Board of Trustees, and previously with the Richmond branch of the NAACP in addition to many more community organizations.
